Californication (TV series) 2007

Californication은 Showtime의 12부작 드라마로 X-files의 히로 'Fox Mulder' David Duchovny가 Hank Moody라는 주인공 역을 연기한다. 행크 무디는 문제가 많은 소설가로 전부인 '카렌'과 딸 '베카'와 미묘한 관계를 이어가는 난봉꾼으로 정의할 수 있다. 카렌을 여전히 사랑하고 벗어날 수 없지만 다른 여자도 너무나 좋아하는... 게다가 카렌의 동거남의 딸과도 부적절한 관계를 맺게 되는 등 그야말로 팍스 멀드 난봉일기라고 할 수 있다. 누드의 빈번한 등장과 성애씬, 마약과 부적절한 관계등이 묘사됨으로써 19금 드라마임을 분명히 드러내고 있으며 망가진 데이빗 듀코브니의 모습을 보는 것은 작은 즐거움이기도 하다. 이 드라마는 X-Files에서의 지적인 이미지와는 분명 다르지만 데이빗 듀코브니가 에로틱한 Red Shoe Diaries라는 영화에도 출연했음(물론 해설자 비슷하게 출연하긴 하지만)을 기억하게 해주기도 한다.

외국드라마를 보다 보면 항상 느끼는 것이 이해하기 어려운 부분이 많다는 것이다. 내가 보수적이라 그렇다기 보다는 그네들의 정서가 우리 또는 나와 맞지가 않는 부분이 많기 때문인데, 특히 애정관계에 얽힌 부분이 많이 그러한데 이 작품 또한 그 괴리감이 꽤 있음을 느끼게 된다. 하지만 사랑하지만 사랑하기가 쉽지 않은 상황, 이상과 현실은 다르고 그 속에서 겪는 다양한 감정을 간접적으로나 엿볼 수 있다는 점에서 꽤 만족한다. 어쨌든 최근 Showtime에서 보고 있는 Weeds와 이 Californication에서 꽤 색다른 즐거움을 느끼고 있는 중이다. 그리고 곧 돌아올 The Tudors도 기대하게끔 한다. 그러고 보니 Showtime은 대부분 19금 성인물 드라마다.

"Californication"은 'California'와 'fornication(사통, 간음)'의 합성어로, 70년대와 80년대 초까지 오레곤주에서 부착되었던 범퍼스티커 "Don't Californicate Oregon"에서 유래한다. Red Hot Chili Peppers의 지금까지 가장 성공적이었던 1999년의 "Californication"은 1500만장 이상이 판매되었다고 한다.--- "Californication"^{imdb trivia} ---
