마약중독 색골 할아버지, 자살미수 게이 외삼촌, 성공지상주의의 별볼일 없는 아빠, 그나마 정상적으로 보이는 엄마, 침묵맹세를 수행중인 오빠 그리고 미녀대회에 열심인 올리브. 전혀 정상적으로 보이지 않는 콩가루 가족이 어쩔 수 없이 올리브의 Miss Little Sunshine 참가를 위해 고물버스로 동행하게 된다.
미스리틀선샤인이란 제목과 스티브 카렐이란 이름에서 그리 이 영화가 끌리지는 않았었지만 지금은 아주 만족스러운 영화이다. 사회, 가족, 인생 다방면에 걸친 그리 가볍지 않은 주제를 한 가족의 짧은 여행에서 제대로 보여주고 있다는 것에 감탄을 할 수 밖에 없다.
가족의 불화, 부부문제, 동성애, 자살, 마약, 노인문제, 청소년, 패배를 용납하지 않는 성공지상주의의 사회를 상징하는 미인대회의 참가 속에서 가족의 갈등과 이해 그리고 화합을 이끌어 낸다.
마지막 올리브와 할아버지의 합작 깜짝 댄스는 최고의 반전이자 이 영화의 메시지를 확실히 드러내고 있다. 미인대회라는 미모와 최고만을 뽑는 대회가 상징하는 것은 인간들의 위선과 거짓된 욕망의 기만일 것이다. 자기가 원하는 것이 아니라 시스템이 원하는 삶을 살아가야만 하는 우리의 모습을 비추고 있다.
절묘하게 구성된 시나리오와 경박하지 않은 웃음 그 속의 비판의식에 가족의 화합을 이끌어내는 해피엔딩까지 흠잡을 데 없는 훌륭한 코미디이다. 거기에 배우들의 오버하지 않는 자연스런 연기가 더해진다. 영화를 보고 나면 이 영화에 쏟아지던 찬사와 호평을 당연히 이해할 수 밖에 없다.

But he's also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Anyway, he uh... he gets down to the end of his life, and he looks back and decides that all those years he suffered, Those were the best years of his life, 'cause they made him who he was. All those years he was happy? You know, total waste. Didn't learn a thing. So, if you sleep until you're 18... Ah, think of the suffering you're gonna miss. I mean high school? High school-those are your prime suffering years. You don't get better suffering than that.
