배우로서 벤 애플렉을 좋아 해 본 적은 없지만 맷 데이먼과 공동각본을 담당했었던 "Good Will Hunting"을 여전히 기억하고 있다. 배우로서는 최근 큰 성과를 보이지 않고 있는 그가 감독으로 데뷔하는 작품. 원작은 Dennis Lehanne의 동명 소설로 작가의 "캔지 앤 제나로The Kenzie-Gennaro novels" 시리즈 중 네 번째라고 한다. 일단 원작을 벤 애플렉은 어떻게 풀어낼 것인가에 대해 우려와 기대를 동시에 가지게 되었다. 솔직히 말하면 우려도 기대도 없었지만.
그런데 이 영화는 뒤로 갈수록 힘을 내며 모든 비판과 메시지를 반전과 함께 드러냄으로 훌륭한 스릴러이며 사회비판의 메시지를 가지고 있음을 스스로 입증해나고 있다. 유아 납치의 수사에 참여하게 된 사립탐정 패트릭과 앤지, 보스톤 이 지역의 토박이로 살아온 패트릭이 동네 양아치들과 경찰인맥을 통하여 탐문 수사를 하며 어린이들이 처한 우울하고 처참한 현실을 목격하게 된다. 그 과정에서 두 사람은 갈등하고 고뇌하며 선택을 끝없이 강요받는다, 사건은 점입과경으로 마약에 얽힌 아이 엄마의 사정이 얽혀 있음이 드러나면서 영화는 마약에 너무나 쉽게 노출된 한심하기 그지 없는 사회를 조롱한다. 결국 아이의 죽음으로 끝나는 듯 하지만 여기서 끝이 아니다. 패트릭은 경찰내의 부정과 조작에 의문을 가지고 조사하기 시작한다. 이제는 경찰 부패와 부정의혹인가? 하지만 영화는 본래의 목적인 납치사건으로 돌아간다. 아이의 친모이지만 보살필 자격이 없는 사람과 아이를 사랑하지만 키울 수 없는 사람의 모습을 제시하면서 영화는 어떤 것이 옳은 것인가를 묻는다. 아이는 유괴되었지만 지금 행복하다. 그러나 친부모도 아이를 기다리지만 미래를 보장할 수는 없다. 과연 어느 것이 옳은 선택일까를 묻는다. 여기에서 나누어지는 패트릭과 앤지의 의견들. 패트릭의 선택은 진실의 존중이고 먼 미래에 떳떳할 수 있는 가에 대한 이상론에 근거하여 친부모에게 돌려주어야 한다는 것, 앤지의 의견은 지금 행복한 데 불행이 뻔히 보이는 곳에 다시 아이를 보내야 하느냐 하는 것이다. 결국 극 중에 여러 번 언급되던 잘난 척하고 나서기 좋아하는 재수없는 놈이란 말을 증명하듯이 패트릭은 자신의 선택을 관철한다. 옮고 그름을 떠나서 그 순간만은 재수 없었다. ^^
그러나 그가 보는 현실은 여전히 암담하기만 하고 앤지와는 이별까지 하게 된다. 아이를 두고 남자를 만나러 가면서 믿을 수 없는 친구에게 아이를 맡기는 헬레나와 인형을 안고 멍하니 TV만 보고 있는 아이의 모습은 바로 미국이 처한 현실이며, 무방비한 환경에 처한 아이들의 모습이다.

또한 아이의 인생을 마음대로 재단하려는 모든 어른들의 모습은 구역질이 나기까지 한다. 아이의 부모, 경찰서장, 친척들, 심지어 패트릭과 앤지의 모습 또한 마찬가지이다. 아이의 인생을 저들이 영원히 지켜 줄 수 없는 현실에 처한 어른 들의 추악함을 느낄 뿐이다. 대안이 없다는. 신이 존재하지 않는 이상 구원이 불가능할 문제를 극적인 반전의 연속과 함께 탁월하게 전달하고 비판하는 벤 애플렉의 놀라운 감독 데뷔작. 솔직히 배우보다는 감독이 훨씬 낫다고 여겨진다. (실제론 세번째 연출작이라고 한다. 극장용으로 만들어지안 첫번째 작품이라고 한다)

Because deep inside you, you know it doesn't matter what the rules say. When the lights go out, and you ask yourself "is she better off here or better off there", you know the answer. And you always will. You... you could do a right thing here. A good thing. Men live their whole lives without getting this chance. You walk away from it, you may not regret it when you get home. You may not regret it for a year, but when you get to where I am, I promise you, you will. I'll be dead, you'll be old. But she... she'll be dragging around a couple of tattered, damaged children of her own, and you'll be the one who has to tell them you're sorry.
Patrick Kenzie: You know what? Maybe that'll happen. And if it does, I'll tell them I'm sorry and I'll live with it. But what's never gonna happen and what I'm not gonna do is have to apologize to a grown woman who comes to me and says: "I was kidnapped when I was a little girl, and my aunt hired you to find me. And you did, you found me with some strange family. But you broke your promise and you left me there. Why? Why didn't you bring me home? Because all the snacks and the outfits and the family trips don't matter. They stole me. It wasn't my family and you knew about it and you knew better and you did nothing". And maybe that grown woman will forgive me, but I'll never forgive myself.
Capt. Jack Doyle: I did what I did for the sake of the child. All right. For me, too. But now, I'm asking you for the sake of the child. I'm begging you. You think about it.
